After my SF disaster of driving up, failing to get parking and driving back to Santa Clara, I grumpily decided to check out In-n-Out Burger for once and for all. This is California’s most famous burger chain and many burger fanatics rave about it.

The decor is 50’s kitsch and works well. Service was friendly as with nearly everywhere in the US, even if I sometimes feel that Texans really mean it when Californians just say it. But he did miss half my order which was a bit annoying. The In-n-Out bit was a misnomer as I then had to wait ten minutes to actually get the food. The value was great - a “Double Double” burger, fries and a shake for just over $5.

Is it the greatest burger ever? Nah, but as fast food goes it is pretty bloody good. Juicy, tasty meat, a good bun and a great sauce. Excellent crispy fries and a lovely shake. Head and shoulders above a Micky D’s or Burger King.

Not worth flying to California for but I left with a nice full belly and a warm glow.

Whilst I am at it, the three other places we ate:
Applebees, McCarthy Ranch- pretty crap but edibleish
Tomatina, Mission College Blvd - excellent pizza and Sam Adams
La Pastaia, downtown San Jose - good Italian food but empty

Must have a “split-decision” breakfast at the IHOP when I’m over on the 13th. A full fry + stacked plate of pancakes with that syrup and magic butter on top. (makes homer simpson drooling face)

There is one about 100 yards from the hotel and I am sorely tempted. Last time I was in one was in 1998 in Vegas. Something so bad shouldn’t feel so goooooood.

You’re making me nostalgic! Enjoy. It’s like California here!

I manage to be in California during the best week of weather we have had here in years. Typical.

By comparison, my poor sister went to Boston and got rained on.

I avoided the sun all week in Sunnyvale because of work, I came home and incinerated my slap-head on Sunday. Ouuuuuch.

That’s pretty funny. Funnier still are all the Spanish, Italians, Californians, etc. who come into the shop burnt to a crisp. They brought umbrellas, wooley hats and jumpers, but no sun cream…

First In-N-Out experience in Vegas last week. Visited 2 locations. Loved the Double Double! Wife and daughter stuck to the cheeseburgers. It’s a freakin’ hamburger joint and it was awesome! Came home, a thousand miles from the nearest In-N-Out, and that’s the thing we miss the most about the trip. Hamburgers are not to be over-analyzed, just enjoyed.

It’s when you have great pizza and great burgers that you realise how badly things are done over here.

We are just about getting the hang of doing good pizza but there is not one truly awesome burger joint in all of Ireland.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - there is a huge opportunity for someone to do great fast food in Ireland. Eddie Rockets had the right idea when they started but then the penny-pinchers got in the way. Even now it is still one of the better ones in Ireland. But we have no-one doing it for the love of a good patty.

BTW, can anyone tell me what a potato roll is made of? I know a lot of US burger places use them but I am clueless as to how they are different from a standard bun or bap.

After listening to a few podcasts on burgers recently I think I want to make a butter burger. Yes, it is exactly what you think it is. Mmmmmmm, melting butter.
