That’s just a standard templated map, probably generated by a script. I’d imagine BBC News do this because they make lots of them, quickly.

You’re also assuming that everyone reading the site is in Europe and is well educated in geography. Perhaps someone in Indonesia, Chile, or the USA (joke) would need a little help locating a relatively small country in Europe.
