You going to Taste of Cork?

Posted on June 15, 2008, by Conor O'Neill, under Business, Cork, Food.

It looks like Taste of Dublin this weekend was a big success and a huge improvement over last year. I was thrilled to hear that they are doing a Taste of Cork from Friday 27th June to Sunday 29th. Over on LouderVoice, we’d like to capture the quality of the event by having people review what they eat/drink/encounter by SMS. The most popular review will win a prize (suggestions on what that should be are very welcome).

Don’t worry, you don’t have to be remotely geeky to do the reviews. Both of my parents are very non-technical and they do SMS reviews all the time. You don’t even have to sign up on the site, it’ll happen automatically when you send your first review to 087-9409325. Here’s all you have to do:

LouderVoice SMS Instructions

There is a good selection of reviews from Taste of Dublin here so you can see the sort of things people were saying. If you want to do it in Cork just follow the instructions above and your reviews will appear on LouderVoice a few seconds later. If you know for definite that you’ll be trying it ahead of time, why not leave a comment here or ask any questions you might have?

The SMS are at your standard rate, they are not premium rate. You can also write long SMS reviews if your phone supports them. We’d love to see the feedback you all have on both the event and the exhibitors, many of whom are local Cork businesses.

By the way, if you run a local biz that is exhibiting at Taste of Cork, we’d love to provide you with mini-flyers to give out to encourage people to review your offerings. Either pop a comment here or mail me on conor AT loudervoice DOT com for more info.

Myself and a few friends have splashed out on VIP tickets to the Taste of Cork on Saturday evening for a friends birthday. We’re all techies so I’ll see if I can get everyone to make a review of the food there.

That’d be awesome Gordon. We have a cool idea for the prize. Will update when it’s decided.

Bubble Brothers will be there, as part of the English Market contingent. I’m sure we could hand out a few flyers.

Thanks Julian. We’ll have something more specific for you (hopefully arriving tomorrow!).

Is there one stand for all the English Market people?

Cool! I anticipate eagerly.

I’ve kept my head down while the discussions about T of C have been going on, but Austin in our market shop says that a half dozen suppliers representing the market will be occupying four adjoining stands. The others may include Kay O’Connell’s fish, ABC bread, the Farmgate and On the Pig’s Back.

It became second nature to both my parents and my mother-in-law after they did the first one. We also formally announced the competition here.

And just to re-iterate, you don’t need to sign up on the site ahead of time to send a review. That’ll happen automatically when you write your first one via SMS.

Went to t of c on Sunday afternoon with the family. This was billed as the ‘family session’ with entertainment for the kids. One puppet show on the hour and balloon artist doesn’t cut it given the entrance fee. While the concept is great shouldn’t this whole experience be more than a excessive dishing out the florins(euros) when it is a show case for the food industry. Pricing needs to be addressed to entice me back next year even if we leave the kids at home.

I hadn’t realised there was any family thing going on. There was definitely no sign of it on the Friday. That sounds badly done.

One way of making sure they notice your opinion is to pop a review on our site LouderVoice. You can just write directly on the site or send the review by SMS. We already have 29 reviews of Taste of Cork in there!

All in all it seemed like a success. I can vouch for the crowds as I was house-sitting (& dog-sitting) for my elderly folks who live in Shanakiel (where I was also reared). I have to say I was not at all impressed with the traffic management whatsoever. It was typical Cork ‘abandon-car-policy-at-all-costs’. Crazy. It took me 30mins to get back up the Shanakiel Hospital hill to the house. Not a Garda in sight. The T of C is a great idea, if not over-priced but please please choose a suitable venue with plenty of open spaces and parking to offer… Fota House and it’s gardens was screaming for this showcase/ The Lee fields another/ plenty of better spaces etc.
The City Gaol has its merits but it’s not supported by the infrastructure required for something like this.
I did however manage to get to my long-awaited viewing of Withnail & I in the Spiegaltent in Emmet Place near the Opera House on Sunday for a 1.30pm viewing. It was a great atmosphere and all enjoyed it!

Completely agree re traffic. We got one of the first buses up on the Friday and it had a terrible time getting up. One car had to reverse up the hill to get out of its way and had smoke streaming out of its clutch.

Whilst the Gaol was beautiful, they do need somewhere far more accessible alright.

By complete coincidence, I was wearing my “Are you the farmer?” t-shirt from Hairy Baby today.
