I'm glad you came back on this JD. Some good stuff on Ben Goldacre's site on this topic. He tries to be as fair as possible.

Sorry to hear the problems have not gone away. Whilst I have seen diet help some things (e.g. nephew stopped drinking orange juice and ADHD improved), if the core problem is deeper then they are just treating the symptoms rather than the cause.

I hope they get to the bottom of it.

Almost 12 months since I first blogged about my other half's Fibromyalgia and unfortunately things didn't 'clear' up as hoped in the interim. She is due to return to work at the Mothership in Ovens next week after having been on sick leave since the end of last May 2007. Update is that the treatments that have worked somewhat are Cranio-Sacral & Integrative medicine (severe tissue manipulation plus alternative treatments) She has been told to come off every food imaginable (dairy, wheat, etc) and I gotta admire her consistency in maintaining this diet. Her employer has been absolutely brilliant also. It is indeed a b@stard of an ailment.

Homoeopathy can and does work but I don't believe it is due to the diluted water and sugar pills. I respect homoeopaths far more than any of the others in that business because most of them genuinely do not seem to be in it for the money.

I really should not knock placebos. I'm convinced my recent taking of Udo's Oil has almost cured my severe RSI in right elbow and forearm. Absolutely no scientific reason for it, but hell if it reduces the pain then I'll keep buying!

Fibromyalgia can be a bastard of an ailment. My aunt has been crippled with it for many years now and no treatment has worked. She has tried everything. The only real relief she seems to get is when she goes to Spain. I assume the heat and light improves things. I hope your wife finds something that works for her.

Just saw this from 2005 on your blog re homeopathy. The Other Half has just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and is a bit incapacitated with it at the moment. She has been to one consultant orthapaedic surgeon (MRI's), one consultant rhuematologist ('take some Panadol & this leaflet'), Chiropracter (of little or no benefit), 2 physiotherapists (nothing more they can do)and now has just started with a recommended homeopath who thus far has made a thorough start and has been very helpful in terms of preparation of diet, supplements and overall 'listening'. Perhaps in time the treatment will be beneficial, hard to say at this point but in contrast to the previous so-called professionals she has not been quick to pocket the cash.

What caught my eye was that you were 'accused' of having science as your religion. Why does it always come to that, accusations?

But I bring science and religion under the one roof of "belief systems", the difference being one of foundation. Thus I can say that I believe in science because of its foundation in objectivity. And I can say that I believe in relgion because ... well, actually, I don't know yet how to finish that sentence... still thinking about it...

Science itself has something to say on the subject of truth. Goedel's incompleteness theorem, as I understand it (that is, badly), says that a thing can be true even if it cannot be proved to be so.

Belief: it hasn't gone away, you know.
